Gum Disease (also known as Periodontal Disease) is one of the leading causes of tooth loss. If diagnosed early and treated properly, gum disease can be cured in most instances.
Periodontal disease is a major dental care issue affecting a large amount of the population, whose primary cause is bacterial plaque located near or below the gum margins.
The key is getting the right diagnosis and gum disease treatment as early as possible. Signs and symptoms of gum disease include pain, pus around the teeth, bleeding gums, swollen gums, loose teeth, chronic bad breath, food impaction between teeth, and gum recession.
A mild form of periodontal disease is called gingivitis and this may result in bleeding during brushing, swelling and increased redness of the gum tissue.
The severe forms of periodontal disease which may develop lead to pus formation, tooth mobility and perhaps eventual tooth loss.
